Death occurs when you are unsuccessful in a quest and you lose all the candies/items that you have collected/earned during that quest. The Cellar and The Sea quests are exempt from this as you can not die/leave the cellar quest and the sea is an infinite level (meaning there is no way to "complete this quest, so if you die/leave you will always keep your items/candies)
